The Room I live in
Architect and artist Ismini Christakopoulou stayed for four months at M4gastatelier. During her residency at M4gastatelier, Ismini focused on a 1:1 investigation of the relationship between sound and static space. This project comes as the next step after the large-scale sound mapping she did in Ghana (2015) and the urban sound-walks she performed in Vienna (2014).
Ambient noise is omnipresent. It is a stimulus that brings you back to reality. It is an experience that evokes an emotional response. Christakopoulou attempts to visualize the effect and affect of this experience. During her studies in Amsterdam, she concentrated on how environmental sounds echo in a space, perceiving the studio as a sound box. Street noises carry solid till the studio in the fourth floor. However, contrary to expectations of the artist, the compilation of them is altered; the visual and sonic image of the city do not collide. Bicycles are absent, while the noise of low flying aircraft en route to Schiphol, is overwhelming. Meanwhile, the sounds from the building itself vary from music from a nearby studio to a mysterious humming. Experiments are characteristic of the visual models of Christakopoulou. The models vary from three-dimensional drawings to tensioned thread.
IIsmini Christakopoulou is an architect, artist, graphic designer and creative director. She is a project researcher at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Christakopoulou tries to merge the vocabularies of architecture and physics, aiming to the creation of acoustic imaging systems. www.minimuc.com
Esther Venrooy works as an artist and composer in the field of sound and (sound) installations. She is a lecturer in 20th century music, performance and experimental art at the High School for the Arts in Ghent. In November 2015 she received her doctor's title on the subject ‘Audio Topography – on the Interaction of Sound, Space and Medium’ at LUCA / KU Leuven. www.esthervenrooy.net
